Who We Are
It takes a team - actually many teams - to offer the diverse programming you will find every day at the Center. Here are the teams that make it happen.
Our Staff
Jayne Colino, Director 617-796-1671
Jayne leads "the
team" and supervises the staff of the Department of
Senior Services. She guides the Center on a daily
basis with an eye toward the future. Jayne also staffs the Newton Council
on Aging, a citizens group appointed by the Mayor to identify and meet
the needs of the Department's seniors in the community.
Contact
Jayne if you would like to discuss the needs of seniors in the
community and how the Center can help.
Alice Bailey, Administrative Coordinator 617-796-1664
Alices organizing skills keep the Center running smoothly. She works to ensure that the Center is a safe and comfortable environment. She keeps our data, keeps us in supplies, processes the finances and keeps the building ship-shape.
Joanne Fisher, Program Coordinator 617-796-1670
Joanne uses her creative abilities to develop our wide array of programs. In addition to producing our monthly newsletter, "Coming of Age", Joanne oversees our volunteer corps. Joanne also produces a monthly cable program, also named "Coming of Age". If you are new to the center, Joanne will give you a tour. Just call for an appointment.
Contact
Joanne if you have feedback on current programs, suggestions for
new programs, if you want to explore volunteer opportunies, or if you
have something newsworthy for "Coming of Age".
Kathy Laufer, Social Worker 617-796-1663
Kathy is an experienced
social worker with a specialty in geriatrics. She and the outreach
worker can be found in the Social Work Suite on the Lower Level. They
are joined by a social work intern. All are available to provide
resources, assistance and support. For an appointment or to learn
about groups currently being offered, please Contact
Kathy.
Lindsay Carlson, Outreach Worker 617-796-1672
Lindsay works with the Center Social
worker, Kathy Laufer, LICSW and the Social Work Intern to reach beyond
the doors of the Center and see that Newton Senior Citizens are able to
access all necessary services. Contact Lindsay Carlson
Custodial Staff
Custodial staff Ken Doucette and John Flynn contribute to the center's clean, safe, comfortable environment that is so important to our mission.
Corps of Volunteers
The Newton Senior
Centers Corps of Volunteers is an amazing team of over 200 individuals
who share their skills, wisdom and interests to create a very special
environment at the Center. We have volunteer teachers, caterers, bingo
callers, singers, musicians, receptionists, data entry, store clerks,
handymen, and lunch site helpers. The list of volunteer opportunities
is endless. If you have an interest or skill, wed love to have you
volunteer for us. Contact Joanne and let her know how youd like to get involved.
Council on Aging
The Council on Aging is a group of interested volunteers appointed by the mayor to serve the needs and improve the quality of life for all Newton seniors focusing on outreach, advocacy, education and legislation.
Contact the Council Chairperson at 617-796-1666.
Lunch Site
Manager Lucy Bedigian
The Newton Senior Center offers lunch Monday-Friday, through the Federal Lunch Program, under contract to Springwell. Diners are offered a choice of hot or cold entrees 5 days a week. A donation of $1.75 is suggested, per lunch, and reservations should be made by 11:00am the previous day by calling the main number at 617-796-1660.
Transportation Staff
Van / taxi drivers and coordinators provide services under a contract with Veteran's Taxi. See transportation info.
We hope this
brief introduction to our teams helps you see what makes the Newton Senior
Center such a special place in our community. So come by and visit!
