What's Happening

  • Registration for Pre-register/ Pre-pay programs taken by the program coordinator. Your payment holds your space.

  • Those wishing a trial class may take one for $8. This will be credited to their fee if they sign up for the full session.

  • No registration for these programs taken without payment.

  • Registration for lunch taken at reception desk or by phone after 11:00 a.m. the previous day.

  • Drop-in, “pay-as-you-go” and “donation” program monies should go into designated box on the wall where the program is held.

Categories

GAMES

Pool Cues- Monday- Wednesday 9:00-12:00… Game Room. A donation of $1 is suggested. This group is scheduled for drop-in billiards. There is a sign in sheet for order of play.  Tournaments are set up a few times a year and those wishing to play may contact Harry Wentzell (volunteer) through the office.

Chess Lessons- Fridays at 1:00 pm - Drop-in

Monday and Thursday Games- (Dining Room) & Friday 1:00 Drop-in play. (Scrabble, Bridge, Mah-Jongg, etc.) A donation of $1 is suggested.

Scrabble- Friday, 1-3:45 Drop-in. Function Room . Suggested donation $1.

Duplicate Bridge- Wednesday/ 1:00. Dining Room. Drop-inplayers seated in order of arrival for friendly Bridge. $2 pay-as-you-go.


Chess Nuts-
Friday/ 12:00. Large Conference Room. Drop-in. Friendly games of chess. Yearly tournament. Suggested donation  $1.


Poker-
  Friday/ 1:00 Game Room. Drop-in. Friendly game. $1 donation suggested.


Bingo-
Tuesday & Friday/ 1:00. Dining Room. Drop-in. Variety of games.
Pay-as-you-go, 50 cents a card.

HEALTH & NUTRITION

Lunch- Monday-Friday/ 11:45. Dining Room.  Pre-register by 11:00 the previous day (for Monday pre-register by 11:00 Friday). Suggested donation, $1.75. Punch cards available in the  office.

Health Clinic- Wednesday & Friday/ 9:00-12:00. Small Conference Room. Nurses from the Newton Health Department see individuals on a first-come, drop-in, basis to take blood pressure.

SHINE- Serving Health Information Needs of Elders- Wednesday/ 1:00-3:00. Richmond Room. A trained representative sees individuals by appointment to assist with health insurance questions. To make an appointment call 617-796-1660.

Legal Consultation- First Friday of the month/ 12:00-2:00. Richmond Room. Law students from Boston College Law School will see individuals by appointment, under the supervision of a law professor. Call 617-796-1660 for appointment.  (Suspends from May-September)

Social Services- Call Kathy Laufer, LICSW or  Outreach Worker, Meghan Kennedy for social service assistance. Concrete services, case management services and clinical services available. Call 617-796-1673 for appointment.

Social Work Group- Tuesday/ 1-2:30… Library/Lounge. Topics changes periodically. This group is led by our Social Worker, Kathy Laufer, LICSW (or our social work intern). See newsletter for details.

Low-Vision Group- First Monday of each month (unless it is a holiday, then moves ahead one week), 10:00.Art Studio. This is a support group for those with vision impairments. Information, friendship and sharing. Brought to the Center by the Vision Foundation. (MAB, Massachusetts Association for the Blind)Back to Categories

FITNESS

Tap-ercise!- EASY, low impact tap dance with fitness moves.  Tap shoes or just taps. Pre-register, 8 weeks/$40.   Tuesdays, 11:30-12:30.

FABB Center- Fit & Balanced Brain Center- Call the senior center to make appointments to use our Nintendo Wii for fitness and fun. Feel better, improve balance and impress your grandchildren!

Tai Chi- Through the sponsorship of Newton/Wellsely Hospital, Union Church of Waban and Epoch Senior Living, the senior center is offering Tai-Chi classees on a drop-in basis. They meet weekly on Mondays from 8:45 - 9:45 and Thursdays from 11:45-12:45. A donation of $3 per class id suggested. Function Room. Sponsors- Union Church of Waban and Epoch Senior Services

Matter of Balance (Fall Prevention Program)- Wednesdays / 1:30-3:30. Function Room. A program brought to Center by Newton/ Wellesley Hospital to help individuals to prevent falls. Exercise, classroom work, videos, support and homework. Call to place name on waiting list.

Beyond Balance I and Beyond Balance II - Now offered two times a week.  Pre-register/pre-pay $40 for 8 weeks for one day and $80 for 8 weeks, 2 days. (Offered Mondays, 12:45-1:45 and Fridays, 11:30am - 12:30pm)

Yoga (chair) – Monday/ 2:00, Thursday/ 1:00- (floor Yoga, 2:00) Function Room. Gentle Yoga, Drop-in. A donation of $2 is suggested.

Aerobics- Tuesday- Friday/ 9:00. Function Room. Certified teacher leads class. Individuals modify exercise to their own needs. Drop-in. Suggested donation $2.

Muscle Conditioning- Tuesday & Friday/ 10:30. Function Room. Certified teacher leads class. Individuals modify exercise to their own needs. Drop-in. Suggested donation $2.

Line Dance I and Line Dance II - Taught by master teacher Manny Correa. Mondays, 10-11.  Function Room. Pre-register/ pre-pay, $40 for 8 weeks. Rolling sessions. As of August, 2009, Line Dance will be offered twice a week with the addition of Thursdays, 9:00-10:00. As with beyond Balance the fee is $40 for 8 weeks of Line Dance I and $40 for 8 weeks of Line Dance II. You may sign up for one or both but cannot combine the two into one.

Pilates- Strengthen your core muscled for overall good health. Wednesdays, 11:00-12:00. Pre-register/Pre-pay. $40/8 weeks.

EDUCATION

Beginner French Lessons- Mondays at 10:30

Spanish- Tuesday/ Beginner, 9:00-10:00, Intermediate/ 10:30-11:30. Art Studio. Conversational language taught. Drop-in. Suggested donation $1.

French Conversation- Thursday/ 1:30. Library/Lounge. Group gathers to speak in French about a variety of subjects. Drop-in. $1 donation suggested.

Learn to Speak Japanese! Stimulate your brain and surprise yourself! Classes will be held on Friday, 10:00-11:00am ( starting October 2). Please pre-register.

Mandarin Chinese- Thursday/ 10:30. Large Conference Room. Learn to speak Mandarin Chinese or learn a bit about the language.  Drop-in. $1 donation suggested.

Current Events & Speakers - Thursday/ 10:00. Function Room. Gathering of retired citizens to hear lectures and join in current events discussions. Drop-in.  $1 donation suggested.

Computer Classes- Schedule set individually for each student. Session is 6-weeks. $50. (Classes held in computer rooms.). To register call Joanne at 617-796-1670

Wondrous Women of the World! Join Rhona Swartz on Thursdays at 10:00am, for a surprising and informative look at some of the fascinating women, who have made history. The first meeting will be on September 10. Please pre-register.

MUSIC

Newton Swing Band- Tuesday/ 1:30. Function Room. Musicians gather to form band. Musicians welcome to join. They practice each week and do gigs around the city. All welcome to sit in listen. Drop-in.

Newton Senior Center Chamber Music Ensemble-
Chamber Music suspended from June through August. Resumes September. Wednesday, 9-10:30. Function Room. Bring your instrument and join in or pull up a chair and just listen! Drop-in.

Lunchtime Piano- Every Wednesday and Friday, diners enjoy live piano music.

THE ARTS

    Fine Arts Studio- Wednesday/ 9:30. Art Studio. Artists gather to support each other. Bring your own supplies. Drop-in.  Suggested donation $1.

    Chinese Painting- Friday/ 1:00. Art Studio. Pre-register/ Pre-pay, $28 per session for 8 weeks of class. Sessions run one after the other.  Student provides materials.

    Ceramics- Thursday/ 12:30-3:00. Art Studio. Pre-register, pre-pay $35 per session for classes running 8-weeks. Teacher will teach technique, offer guidance and handle firing in the kiln. All materials available including raw clay. Purchase bisque-ware at cost, from us.  

    Knitting- Thursday/ 10;30. Art Studio. Drop-in. Learn to knit or just enjoy knitting in the company of other knitters. Suggested donation $1.

    Foreign Film- Friday/ 1:00.Function Room. Variety of foreign language films shown weekly. Suggested donation 50 cents.Wednesday Movie-Wednesdays @ 1:00. Library/ Lounge. Popular films shown.
